Re-running Website optimization

Re-runs, previous versions, and why a score or a FAIL does not move.

Video guide: Re-run your site audit · 62 seconds, narrated

The video was recorded before the site audit and the action plan became one page, Website optimization. On that page the button is Re-run audit.

How do I re-run my site audit? Can I rerun the website analysis after I have updated my site with your suggestions?#

Yes, you can rerun it, and running the website analysis again after you have updated your site with our suggestions is exactly what it is for. Open Website optimization, under Growth Audit in the sidebar, and press Re-run audit next to the version dropdown. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

The re-run rebuilds your action plan in the same pass, so the plan comes back written against the fresh read of your page rather than the old one. The page keeps the controls the two screens had before they became one: Re-run audit by the audit and Re-run action plan by the plan. They are the same run at the same price, so pressing either one refreshes both.

While the run is going, the Website optimization entry in the sidebar turns grey with a spinner on it and the page itself is replaced by placeholders. That is what a re-run in progress looks like, not a broken project or a lost audit. Your previous version is still there: when the run finishes, the entry comes back and the version dropdown holds both.

On Website optimization there is no way to verify a single check on its own. A full rerun is the only way to re-score, and there is nothing to resubmit separately: pressing the button scans your site again from scratch. Every re-run costs 40 credits, whichever of the two buttons you press, and the button carries the price on it.

An App Store or Google Play listing is re-run the same way from Listing optimization, with the same controls and at the same price of 40 credits. If you do not see a re-run button there, say so here.

Can we redo the scoring, or resubmit the site audit after the changes?#

Yes. Redoing the scoring, resubmitting the site and scanning it again are all the same one action here: a rerun. Open Website optimization, under Growth Audit in the sidebar, and press Re-run audit next to the version dropdown: it reads your page again and re-scores it in about 15 to 20 minutes.

Two things to get right before you press it.

  1. Make sure the changes are actually live on the URL the project was built from. A run started before your update went out comes back scored against the old page, and it still spends a run.
  2. A re-run costs 40 credits and covers the site audit and the action plan together. If you spent one by accident, ask here. There is no counter to put back any more, so what a person decides is whether to add credits to your account, and nothing is promised in advance.

My score did not move after I made changes. Why?#

An unchanged score is a result, not a failure of the run. Three different things can be going on.

  1. The audit read the same page as last time. When that happens it says so in a line at the top of the document, telling you the page has not changed since the previous run and the outcome is therefore the same. If you shipped your fixes after the run started, or to a different URL than the one we audit, this is what you will see.
  2. The specific checks you fixed were not the ones dragging the score.
  3. The set of checks being scored changed, so the totals are not comparing like with like.

Open the audit, read that line at the top, then compare the per-check results between versions rather than just the totals. A check that moved from Fail to Partial is progress even when the headline number sits still. If your changes only went live after that run, run it again now and the fresh read will pick them up.

I fixed the problems on my site but the audit still shows FAIL. Why?#

The audit is a snapshot of the moment it ran and does not rescan on its own, so your fixes are not reflected until you run it again. Open Website optimization, or Listing optimization for an App Store or Google Play listing, press Re-run audit next to the version dropdown, then compare the per-check results between the two versions rather than only the totals.

A re-run costs 40 credits, so make sure your changes are live before you press it: a run started too early scores the old page again.

Can I see previous versions of my site audit?#

Yes. Website optimization has a version dropdown listing every past run with its date and score, so you can see the progression.

Listing optimization keeps its past runs the same way, so a re-run of an App Store or Google Play listing audit can be compared with the one before it.

How many site audit re-runs do I get? How many times can I rerun it?#

As many as your credits cover. A re-run costs 40 credits and rebuilds the site audit and the action plan in the same pass, so it is one charge covering the pair rather than one for each.

Your plan grants 300 credits per paid period on the 2-week and 4-week plans and 600 on the 8-week plan, so a period spent on nothing else buys seven re-runs, or fifteen on the 8-week plan. There is no counter on the re-run button any more, only the price, 40 credits. See the Credits article for what everything else costs.

An App Store or Google Play listing audit re-runs the same way from Listing optimization, at the same price. If your project holds both a website and a listing, each page is re-run on its own, 40 credits a run.

I used up a site audit re-run by mistake. Can I get it back?#

Ask here and a person will look at it. There is no counter to reset any more: the run cost you 40 credits, so what is being decided is whether we add credits back to your account. It is not automatic, so nothing changes at the moment you send the message, and nothing is promised in advance.

This covers every version of a wasted run: pressing Re-run by accident, running it before your changes were live on the site, and a run that came back scored against the old page because the new one had not gone out yet.

Tell us which project it is and roughly when the run happened. If credits are added, they show up in your credit history as Gift from support.
